I like to use baking soda to deodorize the fridge and freezer: it's a simple and non-toxic way to do it and seems quite effective. These little packets, specially designed for the job, are so much easier to use than trying to improvise boxes or jars covered with muslin. To me their reasonable price is well worth it. We use this product in many places around the house, so a pack of 12 actually goes pretty quick. We usually have two in the fridge and two in the freezer. I don't know if it's psychological/placebo effect or not, because I can't give a scientific reason why, but we seem to have less moldy food and the ice doesn't seem to have that weird taste (and we change our filter regularly). The fridge doesn't have any unusual smells, but the drawback is if something does go bad, it takes longer to realize that you forgot some takeout from a few weeks ago.It also works great for the kitchen trash can, as well as the trash can we use for the baby's used diapers. Prior to using this product, the whiff of stench every time we threw something away was pretty unbearable, but now, it is MUCH less noticeable, although obviously, keep the lid open long enough it'll still stink.
